This custom gathering table was designed as both a sculptural centerpiece and a functional mechanical object. Built from curly maple and walnut with ebonized oak supports and a key purpleheart detail, the piece expands from a compact 60 inches to over 8 feet in length through a completely hardware-free sliding system built entirely with traditional joinery.
The extension mechanism is driven by custom purpleheart dovetail keys that are permanently joined to the walnut lower tier. These keys glide within precision-cut dovetail tracks beneath the maple upper tier, allowing the walnut section to slide smoothly outward and extend the usable surface area of the table. The system relies entirely on wood joinery—no metal hardware or fasteners—highlighting the mechanical potential of traditional woodworking techniques.
The walnut extension section is anchored by a continuous-grain leg, joined with oversized hand-cut dovetails. Within this leg, a natural void in the wood was carefully shaped to function as an integrated handhold, allowing the lower tier to be extended and retracted intuitively.
Supporting the structure are ebonized oak legs paired with highly figured maple cross-members. At the base, live-edge maple feet ground the piece visually while being connected by a custom stretcher assembly composed of figured maple and walnut. Contrasting bowtie inlays stabilize both the maple and walnut tiers, reinforcing the table structurally while echoing the visual language found throughout the piece.
The result is a table that merges craft, engineering, and natural material expression—expanding seamlessly when needed while remaining visually balanced in its compact form.
