Dining Table No.1 | Curly Spalted Maple

This dining table is crafted from an oversized single slab of curly spalted maple, chosen for its striking figure and dramatic natural character. The slab retains its flowing live edges, allowing the organic shape of the tree to define the silhouette of the table while highlighting the depth and movement within the grain.

A series of curly walnut bowtie inlays stabilize the natural splits within the slab, serving both a structural purpose and a visual one. Their dark tone contrasts beautifully with the lighter maple, creating a rhythm across the surface that draws the eye along the length of the table. Smaller natural voids throughout the slab were preserved and carefully filled with clear epoxy, allowing the history of the wood to remain visible while ensuring a smooth and durable tabletop.

To ensure long-term stability in such a large slab, the underside of the table is reinforced with four recessed steel C-channels. These hidden structural supports help control seasonal movement and maintain the flatness of the surface while remaining visually unobtrusive.

The table was commissioned by a small private cooking school, where it serves as both a workspace and a communal gathering point. Its generous scale comfortably accommodates large groups, making it ideal for shared meals, demonstrations, and conversation—while the remarkable end grain, figuring, and live edges ensure that the natural beauty of the wood remains the centerpiece of the room.
