Coffee Table No.5 is one of the most intricate pieces created in the Wabi-Lynn studio, combining natural walnut with sculptural epoxy work and carefully composed natural materials. The slab’s rich grain and flowing live edge form the foundation of the piece, while a circular epoxy feature set into the tabletop reveals pinecones suspended beneath the surface.
The centerpiece of the design began with a damaged section of the slab. While removing a small area of rot, an embedded nail was discovered within the wood—likely the cause of the tree’s decline. Rather than conceal the damage, a larger section of the slab was removed and replaced with epoxy and pinecones. The pinecones were arranged in a radial composition that draws the eye toward the center of the table, transforming what began as a flaw into its defining visual element.
This design language continues in the base. The angled structural supports incorporate translucent epoxy sections filled with pinecones, each placed intentionally to form an almost truss-like pattern within the legs. These repeating elements create visual continuity between the structure and the tabletop while allowing light to pass through the base.
Along the lighter sapwood edge of the slab, a contrasting walnut inlay introduces a subtle linear accent, while a custom maple inlay on one of the legs stabilizes a natural crack within the structure.
The result is a piece where removal, repair, and careful design work together to reveal new beauty within the wood.
